Zygmunt Andrezejewski Listen>> | Born in 1913 in Toledo, Mr. Andrzejewski spent his early years in Poland, returning to Toledo in 1929. Zigmunt Andrzejewski worked 43 years for Paryski Publishing Company, the Toledo publisher of the Ameryka –Echo, an internationally known Polish language newspaper. Mr. Andrzejewski was a parishioner of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church and a resident of the Kuschwantz neighborhood; he died in Toledo on August 23, 1989. |
Welton Barnett Listen>> | A native of Arkansas, Welton Barnett, was the youngest African American newspaper publisher in Toledo, publishing the Toledo Script from 1945 until 1954. Also, while in Toledo, Mr. Barnett promoted local and regional music groups to his friend Lionel Hampton. Mr. Barnett moved on to Los Angeles to publish the Golden West magazine. He died on June 25, 1994 in the Detroit, Michigan area. |
Robert Bartley Listen>> | A glass cutter at Libbey Glass as well as other companies from 1905 until 1912, Mr. Bartley became a police detective following his work in the glass industry. After his years as a detective, Robert Bartley completed night school to become a lawyer. Along with his career as an attorney, he authored several books, both fiction and nonfiction. He died March 14, 1975 in Toledo. |
Peter Bently Listen>> | A structural engineer, Pete Bentley was the fourth generation of the Bentley family to work in the family business, A. Bentley and Sons; he served as executive vice president and chief engineer. A champion rower in his youth he was selected as an alternate for 1952 Helsinki Olympics. In his senior years, Mr. Bentley won numerous medals in national and international competitions. Mr. Bentley died on July 7, 2008. |
Elijah Benton Listen>> | A native of Mississippi, Elijah Benton settled in Toledo in 1923 following his World War I service. Within a few years, Reverend Benton was called to the ministry and served as pastor of the Mount Zion Baptist Church for forty-eight years. During his years of ministry, he served on several state and national Baptist church boards along with the Toledo Board of Community Relations. Reverend Benton died on July 8, 1977. |
Glen Berning Listen>> | Mr. Berning served as a Toledo Police Officer for 27 years retiring in 1950. He twice ran unsuccessfully for Lucas County Sheriff in the 1940’s. Following his retirement, he relocated to Oakland Park, Florida where he established a construction business while holding office as a councilman and mayor. Mr. Berning lived until the age of 91, dying in Toledo on December 29, 1989. |
Robert Bleckner Listen>> | Mr. Bleckner operated Bleckner Music Store from 1953 until 1983. For thirteen years, the store was located in the Pythian Castle in downtown Toledo. Prior to opening Bleckner Music Store, he served in the Navy during WWII and in many different fields before developing an interest in music. Mr. Bleckner passed away on June 17, 1997 in Toledo. |
Arnold Carmel Listen>> | Mr. Carmel served as the executive director of the Toledo Board of Jewish Education from 1980 until 1987. Born in England, Mr. Carmel spent eight years in Israel before coming to the United States. Following his time in Toledo, he worked in several other communities in similar capacities throughout the United States and Canada. |
Jeanette Czaika Listen>> | Born in Toledo to Polish immigrant parents, Joseph and Mary Samsel, she was raised with many Polish traditions. A long time Polish Village resident, Mrs. Czajka worked for Owens-Corning Fiberglas Corp. for more than thirty years. |

Ruth Davis Listen>> | Born in Toledo on March 24, 1910, Miss Davis was the third generation of her family to lead Davis Business College, currently known as Davis College. Miss Davis attended Ohio Wesleyan University and the University of Arizona and worked in Tucson, Arizona before returning to Toledo. She headed Davis College from 1948 until 1983. Miss Davis served on many community boards and organizations. She was inducted into the Ohio Women’s Hall of Fame in 2001. Miss Davis passed away on March 21, 2005 at age 94. |
